The 2.75-mile trail begins at the Hemlock Lodge parking lot at Natural Bridge, and ascends via the Original Trail (T 1). Originally constructed in the 1890s by the Lexington and Eastern Railroad, it continues to be the most popular route to Natural Bridge today. It is the shortest and easiest trail to the top. The trail climbs over 500-feet through thickets of hemlock and yellow poplar. Along the way, there are four trail shelters.
Cross under the arch and bear right onto the Rock Garden Trail (T 4). This lengthier trail follows a ridge above the lodge for part of its length, and snakes around the hill surrounding Natural Bridge before ending at its base.
