The National World War II Memorial is located in Washington D.C. on the National Mall, and honors the 16 million Americans who served in the armed forces, the more than 400,000 who perished during the battle and those who helped the war effort at home. The monument, commemorating the enduring sacrifice and commitment of the American people, and celebrating the "greatest generation," opened to the public on April 29, 2004 and was officially dedicated one month later on May 29.
