Located in the heart of Greenup county, Greenbo Lake State Resort Park is in an area of bountiful allure and unspoiled scenery. The hills surrounding Greenbo Lake was what inspired Jesse Stuart, a famous Appalachian writer, to author numerous books and poems over his lifetime, and a library and reading room is dedicated in his honor, located within the lodge.

The park grounds are also home to the remains of the Buffalo Iron Furnace, a picturesque reminder to the industrial past, and a one-room school house constructed in 1924 that opens a window into the nostalgic past. In 2007, an amphitheater opened near the community pool that offers various outdoor drama productions throughout the summer.

The 225-acre Greenbo Lake features a marina that is open within season, and offers 65 open slips, rental pontoon boats, row boats, canoes and motor boats. Three feeder creeks flow into the waters and allow canoeists and paddle boaters to explore the narrow passageways that provide bountiful shade, perfect for rest and fishing within the cozy nooks -- important as the lake is home to two state largemouth bass records, and is stocked with large bluegill, crappie, catfish and trout.

A swimming pool is next to the lodge for lodge guests only. A newer community pool, featuring a water slide and a children's water play area, is only a ten-minute walk from the lodge.

Michael Tygart Loop Trail

The Michael Tygart Loop Trail is a long seven-mile loop open to hikers, parts of it restricted to horseback riding and mountain biking. The trail head for this lengthy trail is at the lodge parking lot. The trail essentially crosses the road to the marina and campground near the cemetery approximately 1.5 miles from the lodge. There is no mountain biking or horseback riding on this segment of the trail.

At the cemetery, mountain bikers are allowed for the trail to the west. About 2 miles to the west of the cemetery is a trail shelter and is a primitive shelter for back country camping. There is no fee to use the shelter, however, overnight gusts must register at the front desk of the lodge. Approximately 1 mile to the west of the shelter is Bays Ridge Road. Turn right and follow the trail for approximately 1/4 of a mile and turn right onto the trail.

A short but moderate descent awaits hikers and mountain bikers. Horseback riders must use part of an alternative trail for the descent down the hill. Once at the bottom, the Michael Tygart Loop Trail follows the Pruitt Fork Creek valley until one reaches Greenbo Lake. There are several creek crossings. Several abandoned home sites from the 1800's, a variety of plant life and animals are abound in the valley. Once the lake is visible, the trail follows the shore of the lake for about two miles.
